Bingo - and everything about it.

What is the Bingo Fund Raiser?
The South Lyon Band Parents Association has a “Large Bingo License” issued by the Charitable Gaming Division of the State of Michigan.  The Bingo Fund Raiser is the major source of funding for the South Lyon Band Parents Association.

What does the Bingo Fund Raiser do for the Bands?
Bingo benefits both “Band Parents” and “SLBPA.”  Proceeds generated from Bingo go into the General Operating Budget of the South Lyon Band Parents Association.  Also, adults that work will receive $10 per 4 hour shift into student accounts to be applied towards band related fees.   Less than 4 hours is a half shift, and you still get $5.   In addition, we have the follow bonus incentives:

Start Up Incentive
To help encourage our families to try out helping at bingo for the first time, we will pay out a "bonus incentive" as follows:
First time helping (Training): $10
Second time helping (Working for real): $10
Third time helping (Working for real): $30!
.. then you return to the standard pay policy.
This has to be accomplished over no more than an 8 week period.
Payouts above assume full 4 hour shifts.   You can still qualify doing half shifts - 2 half shifts are equal to a full shift.
Both parents, or other family member adults are eligible to earn this money. This only applies for your VERY FIRST time working bingo. If you have worked bingo in a previous year then this counts as already working and you are not eligible for the start up incentive.

Month after Month Incentive
To help encourage our families to help on a regular basis, we will out a "month after month incentive."
Come at least 1 time for 4 consecutive months, and the first time that you help in that 4th consecutive month, it is a $20 night for you, instead of a $10 night. The fifth month then starts your next 4 month iteration.
This assumes full 4 hours shifts each month, or 2 half shifts each month.

Students that work (concessions) cannot get money like the adults, but they can count the hours as service hours towards their letter.

This is a significant portion of the budget for SLBPA and greatly helps reduce the band expenses for many parents!

What kind of help is needed?

Food Prep: Ready by 4:30pm 2 people, making and buying the food for Bingo. We serve hot meals/sandwiches along with homemade desserts. 1 person covers main entrees and one covers desserts.  Sometimes things can get slow here and you will be needed out on the Bingo floor to help there.  We can take up to 2 kids here total on any night - just gets to be too crowded.  Here are some food prep activities.

Concessions: 4:30pm - 8:00pm  2 adults to cover selling the consessins during Bingo. If you are doing food prep, you usually can cover this as well, so sign up for both!

Charity Tickets: 4:30pm - 8:30pm 2 adults to sell tickets during the night.

Caller: 6:00pm - 9:00pm 2 adults to work the numbers. Men are preferred because the lower voices are easier for people to hear. Help with final clean up as well.

Floor Workers: 6:00pm - 9:00pm 2 adults to help the players out while they are playing, read back bingo numbers and clean up tables. Will help with final clean up as well.

Dessert Donation: Ready by 4:30pm 2 Any donated desserts can be sold, make up an extra batch of anything and we can sell it.

Chair Person: We always have to have someone at the site that is on the Bingo license as the "Chair Person."  The Chair Person needs to be available to help set up, close, know the rules.  At least one chairperson needs to be there – so the more we have, the less each has to do.

How do I sign up to help out?

Helping is easy!  We will start you with a very easy assignment; selling concessions or as a floor worker.  After you work a couple shifts you will see how easy all the assignments are.  If you have any questions or would like to schedule a shift contact: John Hester. (see the Booster contact page for contact information.)    Or use the sheet that you can find on the home page.

Bingo Workers commonly work from 4 pm – 8 pm or 5:30 pm – 9:30 pm.  Concessions are sold from 4:30pm – 8:30pm. Also, individuals that prepare concessions could grocery shop and prepare the food during a time that fits their schedule.

Bingo is held on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Thursday of each month, and on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  Bingo is held at the South Lyon VFW Hall 2502.    Note that any worker that comes in at 6:00pm or later can only count the shift as half a shift, but you can add half shifts up as well.  Sometimes splitting the time works better for people and their schedules.

Lastly, another way to help is to come and PLAY bingo.  You could win $$$ and help “SLBPA” at the same time.
